VR for safety training: things to consider

Virtual Reality (VR) devices can be used to train workers on safety topics with the benefit of the ability of doing so without having workers exposed to unnecessary risks; training workers in an engaging manner and assessing their practical abilities reliably. Example topics include emergency situations, hazard identification, PPE, etc..

However, in addition to being of a relatively high cost, VRs have their own safety issues. Several unwanted symptoms have been reported to be associate with the prolonged use of these devices such as: discomfort; repetitive stress injury; and interference with medical devices.

Professional development plans: one size does not fit all

It can be clearly seen that we love copying. Whether we are buying a car, a house, furniture or whatever; or when we are starting a business or even selecting a destination for honey moon, we just copy other people choices.

Regardless of the reason behind this tendency, it should be avoided when planning for our professional journey. Our development plan should not only help us achieving professional goals, but should also meet our current needs and abilities. Our learning preferences vary including visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic, so it may be a good idea to consider this when selecting a learning material to use. In addition, learning materials may suit professionals of a specific competency level. Therefore, determining your current competence level will help you shaping your development plan.

The new IOSH blueprint takes all of the above aspects in consideration. Using the Self-assessment tool, members are able to determine their competency levels against the IOSH competency framework then create a personal development plan. The resources library provides a variety of learning materials that suit learners of the different learning preferences. Using IOSH blueprint will not only help you benchmark your competency against the most agreed on set of competencies for health and safety practitioners, but will also help you doing so in a way that suit your needs.
